Numicon Programme is already in our classrooms of
Infants Education and our kids have enjoyed playing with the Numicon shapes,
baseboards, and coloured pegs. During the first sessions, we just let them play
with the material without explaining them what those materials were for. After
observing the students playing with Numicon, we notice how amazing the results
have been since every group responded differently, for example, some four
years-old students used the coloured pegs as thimbles and played with them as
if they were castanets; whereas most of five years-old students tried to build
up castles with the Numicon shapes. We have also observed some students using
the shapes to make patterns and sorting them depending on their size or colour.
The most
important aspect of these first sessions is that definitely students love
working with Numicon. Now they often ask the teachers…“when are we going to play with Numicon?” A big part of embedding
the Numicon Approach is creating that enjoyable environment in these sessions.
